Story Poles and Their Purpose

Feb 20, 2017

Proposed building story poles for construction

What are Story Poles?

Story poles are typically constructed out of wood, pipe, or steel posts and stick up vertically from the ground surface. Story poles are often used to assist in the construction design process or may be required by a local agency prior to project approval. They help to represent the silhouette of a proposed structure or possible addition to an existing building. They are used in both residential and commercial developments, usually within coastal and mountain view areas where there may be view preservation concerns.

How Can Story Poles Benefit My Project?

Once the story poles have been installed to their specified location and height, their visual aid can be used to show the impact the design will have on the neighboring views. Additionally, by showing the elevation and ridgelines of a proposed project, it’s possible to minimize the impact a project will have on the surrounding environment. After installation you can see how the natural landscape will interact with the proposed project, making it possible to alter the design to accommodate for existing tree heights and how to best fit the structure to the environment. As the design process evolves, the story poles can be raised or lowered to mirror the changes made to the overall project.

How Quickly Can They Be Installed?

Installation of story poles can be done in just a matter of days. Once the poles have been installed, they can be used for days or left up for months. After their visual aid is no longer needed, the poles can be removed and the surrounding area returned to its normal state.
