Sonoma County Ordinance #6406 – Temporary Housing Opportunity?

May 17, 2023

Temporary Housing Opportunities

Recently the Sonoma County Planning Commission expanded the opportunities to provide temporary housing on most properties in the form of a RV, trailer, manufactured unit, or other movable housing. Previously, temporary housing was only allowed for care during illness/disability or to provide housing during major remodeling and rebuilding of housing. Now temporary housing is a possibility before even applying for a building permit for a potential housing unit.

An administrative permit will be required from the County with proof of access to utilities before temporary housing can be set up. Septic access can be in the form of a connection to an existing system with available capacity or a hold-and-haul contract with a licensed hauler. Septic capacity would have to be documented. The typical path is in the form of a bedroom swap or by documenting the condition and capacity of the existing septic system. The permits for temporary housing will have to be renewed on an annual basis.

Give BC Engineering Group a call at (707) 542-4321 or set up a meeting through our website www.bcengineeringgroup.com to discuss if you are interested in setting up temporary housing on your property or need help navigating the permitting process! We can help locate and research records on the existing septic system, perform septic inspections to determine the system condition and capacity, or help you through the permitting process.
