Water-Wise Landscapes for Your Residential Property

Northern California Water-Wise Landscapes

Did you know that half of our drinking water is utilized for landscape irrigation? Many people would be shocked at this revelation, and perhaps even motivated to reconsider their residential landscaping and irrigation needs. Residential landscapes are most often a personal choice related to function, aesthetics, and preferred level of maintenance. For instance, homeowners often desire lawns for their children to play on, for their pets, or simply for their green color. However, there are other landscape possibilities to consider with significant benefits such as food production, habitat creation, and even water conservation. Low water-use landscapes are often more economical to maintain and irrigate, and can provide many additional benefits including habitat value, species diversity, energy conservation, aesthetic beauty, and reduction of waste transportation.

If you are one of the many in our community who have been working from home for the past year, you have spent much time looking at your landscape and perhaps even considering an upgrade. If you have a thirsty lawn that you no longer wish to irrigate or maintain, there is no better time to convert it to a low water-use native garden given our extended period of drought conditions. Some additional food for thought: one square foot of lawn requires about 25 gallons of water per year. For a typical residential lawn of 600 square feet, that equates to 15,000 gallons of water, or more than enough to fill a 12’x24’ pool every year.
